TRADITIONAL ZELLiGE
Single colour traditional Moroccan zellige tiles are available made to order, glazed in your choice of colour in our signature shades.
Once reserved for decorating only the finest homes and palaces, zellige are making their way into modern interiors, however modern design doesn’t mean modern methods as their beauty and covetability lies in the ancient hands on fabrication.
SOFi MODi zellige tiles are hand formed using a beautiful high quality clay found in Fez, Morocco the birthplace of Moroccan zellige.
The production of zellige requires true commitment to the craft and learning this niche process takes many years of repetitive work with only a few apprentice arriving to the status of master craftsmen (maâlem)
ABOUT ZELLiGE
After enduring an involved hands on process of sourcing, drying, crushing, sifting, soaking, more sifting and wedging, natural clay is then slapped rhythmically together by commanding expert hands into withered wooden molds and left to dry atop a compact earthen floor.
Flat compact tiles are sunbaked for days before entering the kilns and only then, once sundried, zellige are stacked and fired
We use a small gas kiln for the glaze firing (in Marrakech) SOFi MODi ceramics are hand coloured using European glaze, with some pieces entering the kiln 3 times until the desired effect is achieved.
Each firing can be quite different. Much like the old olive wood fired kilns in fez, an atmospheric kiln adjusts to the weather, meaning each firing yields the same results but the practice is not always the same. We fire to 1100+ degrees celsius, much higher than most local workshops, to ensure our zellige are as strong as possible, with a higher quality finish for our clients.
FAQs
How do you ship the tiles?
Tiles are boxed, each tile face to face, in a manageable weight, of around 15kg per box. packed vertically with minimal space between.
Are the tiles suitable for my space?
Handmade zellige bring a warmth unattainable from ‘other tiles’. use them wherever you would use other hard surfaces. Suitable for kitchen splashbacks, bathrooms and outdoor wet areas. get creative and use them under kitchen island bench tops as a kick board.
Can i install the tiles myself?
Why not ! Zellige are not uniform tiles, that is part of their warmth and charm. being handmade they vary in height slightly and can differ in size, making installation easier with the final surface area naturally uneven
What type of grout and materials should i use for installation?
Traditionally cement held them in place, however mixing some glue with your cement is only going to make things more durable. There are a myriad of grout on the market, which enables you to make more or less of a statement. best to take a sample of your zellige with you when choosing your products.
How many square meters do i need?
Best to add on 10% more of your total area, when ordering your tiles. generally the more tiles you need to cut to fit corners or accomodate fittings, the more chance of breakage. you can always use spare or broken pieces to make a tabletop or apply to another space to balance your interior designs.
What if i order too many?
it is inevitable that there will be extra tiles, get busy and use them to revamp and old table top or tile a simple cubed stool. You can use them whole, or broken pieces make great mozaic.
